Cold can enter the house not only through doors, floors and windows, but also from above, from the attic, which is poorly insulated or, in general, blown away by all the winds. Therefore, attic insulation is an important issue that we will solve today.
Attic insulation is possible in many ways, and the best of them will be to attract a professional team to work, which will not only fulfill the order as soon as possible, but will also do everything professionally. Of course, the masters are well versed in materials and technologies, they understand what it means to warm the attic with expanded clay or polyurethane foam, but their work is not cheap. Therefore, if there is an amount for high-quality and quick warming of the cold attic, it is advisable to spend it and forget about the cold in a week, if the situation is different, we get to work and do the insulation of the attic of the house in the country with your own hands.
Preparing the attic for insulation
Very often, the attic is clogged with a variety of rubbish, which will need to be removed before warming. Old books and clothes, items of family values and other things we lower from the attic at least for a while.
In addition, it will be necessary to remove all the seals from the cracks that once got there. Polyfoam, felt, sawdust from the floor with which it was sprinkled for warming in the past, small construction debris and cobwebs, everything must be cleaned with high quality.
Now we bring to the attic all the materials for insulation and the tool that is needed, we provide ourselves with a working area and proceed to the process.
Do not forget that in this room there should be good lighting in order to qualitatively carry out all the work.
We insulate the roof from the inside
The technology of attic insulation with polystyrene or mineral wool (inexpensive materials) has certain requirements. Thus, on the surface of the roof should be laid crate for insulation, then a layer of waterproofing, after - insulation, vapor barrier and decorative finish.
A waterproofing layer is necessary in order to protect the insulation materials and the interior from moisture, all the more necessary if the attic of a private house with an old roof is insulated.
The waterproofing is laid on the rafter structure of the preload, a sealed layer is created. To do this, we need a special film and a mounting stapler with brackets of 5-7 mm.
Do not forget that the film layer should be laid on the surface of the entire roof, with small flaws.
For the installation of the crate, we chose the usual mounting rail, which will not pull the budget, but will become a good basis for laying insulation.
The insulation material can be laid without the crate, directly on the rafter structure, but then it will be necessary to press it with the crate, which will be created for decorative decoration. This way will save a little money and time.
So, if we decided to lay directly on the rafters and roofing, prepare the fasteners for insulation and proceed.
If you chose mineral wool for work, it will be necessary to lay it directly from the roll, so as not to take off dimensions and cut material again. You can fix the mineral wool on glue, or simply by inserting it between the materials of a wooden structure. If this method is not suitable, mineral wool can be glued to the base or planted with fungi.
If you chose styrofoam or polystyrene foam as the material for attic ceiling insulation, you can do almost the same as in the previous example - install the slabs in the rafter structure and fix them to the mushrooms. In addition, with foam boards it is always more convenient, because they can simply be installed in a spacer.
Vapor barrier insulation
Insulation of the attic with mineral wool, ecowool or expanded polystyrene involves the installation of a vapor barrier layer directly on the insulation layer, because the condensate and moisture that can form can affect the quality of work and the durability of the insulation. This should be done sequentially, approximately, as with a waterproofing layer.
Roll the vapor barrier film over the surface and press it onto the staples. In addition, be sure to glue the seams with special tape to create a seal.
Remember, if you work with more expensive materials, there may be requirements for installing a “breathing” film, one-sided vapor barrier and other types of film, which, for example, has a one-way throughput.
Creating a lathing and cladding insulation
After laying the waterproofing, insulation layer and vapor barrier, you can proceed to the decorative finish, that is, to the lining of the attic. It can be produced using, say, OSB boards or drywall, but under them it is necessary to create a quality foundation.
One of the secrets that will help save money is the crate for installing the skin in a level with a rafter structure. That is, the basics of the frame you already have, it will only be necessary to lay the cross, well, or if this option does not fit, create a full-fledged frame for decoration.
The frame can be made from the same bar that we mentioned earlier, or you can choose a metal profile to create it, which we have already talked about many times. Further, on the finished frame, which is installed according to the technology of the selected material, sheathing sheets are laid.
We will not touch the decorative finish itself, just as we didn’t particularly go into the details of the lining from the inside, since this is a slightly different topic, and we don’t know exactly what material you will work with.
It is very important to insulate and communication. Naturally, this includes ventilation shafts and various pipes, but we will not touch some of them. For example, a chimney or its chimney, because it will be wrong to make insulation and thereby lose heat from the coolant from the inside. Insulation of ventilation pipes and heating pipes in the attic is necessary, and it should be carried out without delay.
Insulating pipes will be quite a special overlay, because we do not expect subzero temperatures after insulation in the attic, which means we don’t need to spend money on expensive materials.
Foam, mineral-wool, basalt, perlite and other materials popular today can be chosen for insulation and insulation of pipes and ventilation ducts.
Attic floor insulation
Insulating the floor or attic flooring involves choosing the right material, but since we started working with inexpensive materials, we will continue the same way, for example, using mineral wool or polystyrene foam.
Before the actual warming we need to make a high-quality cleaning of surfaces. In addition, lay logs on the floor that will hold the skin. To do this, you should examine the floor for bumps, work with the level and create a quality foundation.
Now, we should only practically repeat the process that we described earlier - lay the moisture barrier, put the insulation more tightly, cover it with vapor barrier and carefully, strictly level the board or, say, an OSB board of 10-12 mm, and cover it with varnish.
As you can see, warming the ceiling of a cold attic is not a difficult process, and it very much resembles the warming of the floor of the cottage, which we talked about earlier.
Work in the attic should take place in conjunction with protection materials. For example, the same protection of wood from moisture and microorganisms will make it possible to serve it much longer.
Of course, it is possible to warm the attic with sawdust or clay, as well as more modern and expensive materials, but at this stage you can stop at warming the attic with mineral wool or polystyrene, because these materials have proven themselves very well. How to insulate the attic of a country house (video)
Around the same time, the attic of an uninhabited house is warmed up, only much less money is spent there, and the attic of a wooden house is insulated, where it will only be necessary to choose a wooden decorative finish to maintain the overall style. Therefore, adhere to the technology, choose feasible materials by means and own experience, and conduct insulation of the attic with your own hands, without hiring craftsmen and spending extra money.
