Growing horseradish in the country
It will be most correct to choose a place for landing where previously nothing has grown at least for several years. If this is not possible, then define a platform for it with early soil-free crops. It can be a bed after early potatoes, table beets, tomatoes or cucumbers. Next, timely soil preparation should be carried out.
Before planting, it is necessary to determine not only the place of planting, but also the soil that will be most suitable. It can be considered fertile soil, but not heavy clay areas where horseradish grows bitter, woody and dry. Also, pay attention to the movement of the sun, it is better to choose a sunny area, with minimal shading.
The preparation of the garden is as follows: the site should be fertilized with a certain composition, and also dig well after fertilizing. Further, the site is leveled and well spilled with water, and only after that it can be considered ready for planting horseradish. For fertilizer, they use 2 tbsp. l nitrofoski, 1 bucket of humus and some wood ash.
Horseradish garden or ordinary horseradish is considered a perennial plant and can grow almost without care for many years. But those summer residents who care about the quality of the crop and its quantity prefer to grow horseradish in one place for a maximum of 2-3 years. If you grow longer, the plant branches, becomes woody, root crops lose in size and quality.
Propagation of horseradish on the site occurs using cuttings that are harvested from the autumn period. Experienced summer residents consider the most successful cuttings to be about 13-15 cm long and not more than 1-1.5 cm thick. In addition, new plants can also be planted by pruning roots, about 6-8 cm, strong and stable.
How to plant cuttings in the ground? First of all, they need to be prepared. The thoroughness of the process depends only on how good you want the crop, and therefore, if you have little time, you can do without preparation, but if you want to get an excellent root crop for the crop, listen to our several tips. Firstly, extra buds should be removed from the cuttings. Only a few lower buds are left on the handle for root formation, as well as a few upper ones for the formation of greenery. The kidneys are removed by wiping with a hard mitten, but this method is not always effective, since after it remains more than half of the living for branching of the kidneys. In this case, you can use another method, before using which the kidneys should be revived. They germinate well after preparing the cuttings in wet sawdust or peat, about 15-20 days, at a temperature of no more than + 18 ° C. Now the kidneys are easily visible and the extra ones can be safely removed, leaving only the most necessary on the handle.
Now, when the cuttings are properly prepared for planting, they can be planted in the ground. This is done quite simply, in small holes and at an angle of 45 degrees. After planting, the main part of the shank should be in the hole, that is, about 10-12 cm, and only a part with several buds should remain on top of the soil, which should protrude only a few centimeters.
It is necessary to observe the planting pattern, approximately 60x40 cm, which will give plants the opportunity to develop normally after growing up and form a strong above-ground part.
If you do not pay attention to the root crop, then you will get a poor crop of poor quality, but if you provide stable care, then the fruits of your labors will be much more interesting.
There is nothing complicated in caring for this plant. Occasionally, it must be watered, after loosening the soil. Also, do not forget about removing weeds from the beds, as they not only clog the root system of the plant, but can also become provocateurs of various unpleasant diseases.
In truth, if you plant horseradish once and even forget about it for several years, each year you can get exactly as many root crops as you need for seeding. But such a result is not always interesting, and therefore, try to give the plant at least a little more attention.
What to do with horseradish in your garden
In addition to standard plant care, you will need to carefully consider possible pests that, without a specific effect on them, can quickly destroy the crop. Babanukha and flea are the main ones. These small insects in a huge population attack the flesh of the plant, due to which it spoils, and the leaves completely turn into dust. To destroy them and save the plant for a good crop, we recommend that you explore a simple way to control pests. It is necessary to prepare a solution of mustard and pepper in warm water, about 30 degrees. The solution should be cool and really sharp, about 100 g of mustard and pepper in a bucket of water. Further, the plants are sprayed, especially those parts where insects have been spotted.
Varieties of horseradish
Not only the proper planting of horseradish and stable care make it possible to grow a good harvest, but also the right choice of variety. At the moment, we know only a few really praised by summer residents species that show excellent results: Atlas, Tolpukhov, Valkovsky, Suzdal.
A correctly selected variety and the correct agricultural cultivation technique are fundamental factors in the harvesting of root crops in the fall. Also, using the recommendations of professionals and attention to the plant, you can grow a culture not only for yourself, but also for business.
