Methods for cleaning and disinfecting pool water


The water we use to fill the pools is not perfectly clean. In its composition, it contains many chemical elements and organic impurities. Even those sources located in ecologically clean areas of our country are not capable of supplying us with water that does not require treatment, especially since only tap water gets into the pools. Artesian water is not a solution. The amount of organic matter in it, of course, is minimal, but the content of inorganic substances, such as iron, fluorine and other elements, is increased, and this is quite harmful to humans. In this article, we will consider ways to clean liquid for swimming pools to the extent that it is not acceptable and completely harmless to the human body.

Even filling the pool with “pure water”, for example distilled, will not give us full confidence in its compliance with all standards. Such water is quickly polluted by microorganisms from the external environment, dust, plant particles, and corrosion products. Moreover, the habit of taking a shower before jumping into the pool is not yet 100% developed, so lotions, deodorants, gels and other particles of cosmetics and household chemicals that we use also fall into it.

It is quite clear that such water is not suitable for the pool, especially if we let in children whose skin is most susceptible to such pollution. And therefore, you should not only monitor the constant change of fluid in the swimming tank, but also use a variety of cleaning and disinfection methods in a timely manner.

Acid-base balance

In its composition, clean water is considered neutral, but tap water has completely different indicators. Depending on the number of elements and their mass parts per unit of measurement of the amount of liquid, acid and alkali can be terrifying. It is they that lead to unpleasant consequences after bathing. Irritation of the mucous membranes, unpleasant sensations on the skin, general discomfort of the body, unpleasant odors, turbidity, calcareous deposits - all these are consequences of not very clean water, to which measures were not taken in time.

The generally accepted pH is considered to be 7.2-7.4. It is in this state that water does not contribute to the development of corrosion and violent activity of microorganisms, which not only give a person an unpleasant sensation, but also negatively affect filtration devices, heating systems and pool lights, etc. With a normal pH of water, undesirable processes can be avoided, as well as enhancing the effect of various disinfectants. Therefore, we advise taking the acid-base balance seriously, controlling it and regulating it in time.

At the moment, there are many devices that can adjust the pH level, all the more necessary if you intend to use water purification systems in the pool, because most of them work normally only in combination with pH regulators.

Pool disinfection

In addition to constantly changing water and adjusting the acid-base balance, you will need to get rid of possible organic matter, for which specialists have developed several effective methods:

  • Chlorination. The most famous and popular method. It is quite effective and, in comparison with other methods, is available. Chlorination of water will preserve its properties for a long time, that is, you can carry out chlorination rarely and maintain it in a certain state. Chlorination is possible in manual mode and using special automatic systems. Using this method, water is disinfected with chlorine or certain compounds that contain it. Due to the chemical reaction, a large percentage of microorganisms and bacteria die. But, at the same time, chlorination is increasingly forgotten using more modern methods, or they are used in combination with other disinfection measures, which is most effective;
  • Ozonation. This method is considered the most environmentally friendly. And for good reason, because ozone is used for cleaning, a sufficiently strong oxidizing agent, which gets into the water, destroys pollution and bacteria, and then gets into the environment and mixes with air, leaving the standard chemical composition. The method is very competitive, since it takes less time to clean, and at the same time it 100% cleans water from microorganisms harmful to humans. At the same time, all useful trace elements remain in the composition. It can be said that ozonation renews water, as it not only cleanses, but also acquires a pleasant taste and smell, and therefore it can be safely used to fill pools;
  • UV exposure. It is proved that ultraviolet irradiation of water completely excludes from its composition all harmful microorganisms that are now known to science. The liquid is cleaned even of those elements of the composition that remained after processing chemical and physical. At the same time, the organoleptic properties remain unchanged. Possessing such advantages, a similar method could be called the best, but, unfortunately, it has some disadvantages. Irradiation cleaning is extremely ineffective in case of severe contamination, it does not have a post-action, that is, it does not destroy bacteria and microorganisms that enter the water after cleaning. That is, ultraviolet irradiation is effective only if applied every day. This method requires the involvement of a qualified professional;
  • Ionization. The purification system, which operates on non-ferrous metal ions, became known to us not very long ago, although we have known the properties of, for example, copper and silver in relation to water for a long time. But, albeit recently, but these systems are quite popular. Ionizers effectively cope with pollution, entering into a direct reaction with water, but, unfortunately, do not affect fungi. At the moment, several modern methods of using non-ferrous metal ions for water purification are known - direct contact of water and metals, or the use of special ionization guns that saturate water with ions. The effectiveness of ionizers is a rather controversial issue, since with an excellent rate of destruction of some microorganisms, ions are generally inactive for others, to work with such systems requires strict control of specialists and so on;
  • Active oxygen purification. Apparently, this method is most effective for use in small home pools than in public pools. The technology is simple, and somewhat similar to chlorination. Granules, powder or a special mixture are poured into water and react with oxygen, which is contained in the pool water. The reaction gives a cleansing effect. You must be aware that such reagents can quickly decompose and do not have time to complete their task, and an overdose for the final cleaning can be dangerous for humans. Therefore, a similar method should be used very carefully.


When choosing a method of water purification for your own pool, you should pay attention not only to the size of the bowl, the composition of the water, the pH level and other indicators, but also to the effectiveness of the method you define. Only increased attention to cleanliness and the right solution will help you forget about the problems and carefree use of the pool for many years.
