Choosing a foundation for a polycarbonate greenhouse

The construction of a greenhouse in a summer cottage takes place in several stages, the most mandatory of which is the construction of a foundation. Of course, there are other important steps, such as planning, choosing a location, selecting coverings and others, but we would like to devote our present topic to the foundation for the greenhouse. We will consider the choice of the foundation, its construction, the correct pouring and installation of the frame on it using the example of building a polycarbonate greenhouse.

Choosing the foundation for the greenhouse

You can talk about this issue for a very long time, because we often try to get around the costly part and save, but on the condition that the construction is of high quality and reliable. Let's talk about several types of foundation for a polycarbonate greenhouse to understand the big picture.

The foundation of the timber

The simplest and most inexpensive material that can be used to create a foundation for a greenhouse. The frame itself for such a greenhouse and the cover material will not weigh much, especially if the greenhouse is small. This means that the foundation made of timber can easily withstand the load and give the greenhouse the necessary rigidity for installation.

True, there is one, but quite a big minus of such a foundation - it will not last long. The approximate period of operation of the beam under the greenhouse is not more than 5-7 years. Further, it will begin to decompose under the influence of atmospheric phenomena and the life of insects, and will soon deteriorate. But, if you have access to a tree or the opportunity to purchase a timber at a bargain price, then this problem will not be a problem for you. Five years later, after spending only a day on the construction of such a foundation, again put your greenhouse on a brand new beam, for another 5-7 years. And if you use more expensive material, for example, deciduous timber, then even a little more.

Brick foundation

The brick foundation for the greenhouse will, of course, be stronger than wooden, more reliable and much better.

Its service life can only be determined by the correct location of the greenhouse, the quality of the material and the work performed. It is also worthwhile to correctly lay the brick on a small pillow specially prepared for the foundation, and if possible, provide the brick with waterproofing, very quickly it spoils when it comes into contact with the ground. And then, everything can be done according to a given standard, but you should dance from the size of the greenhouse. That is, the larger the greenhouse, the wider and higher the foundation should be made of brick, so that it can normally withstand the weight of the structure. The brick is laid on an ordinary mortar, in several rows, see for yourself, depending on the required size. You can also spill the brick foundation on the sides with mortar, to a depth of 30-30 cm, a width of 10 cm, this will give the base resistance to weather conditions and reliability.

Stone foundation

Under the polycarbonate greenhouse, the stone foundation is also perfect. It is such a quality that is necessary if we put aside the financial part. Such a foundation can hold the frame and the greenhouse for a very long time, probably our grandchildren will also be able to use a similar greenhouse for growing crops. That is, everything is clear here, expensive and really reliable. But, you can also skim through the creation of such a foundation.

Making a foundation for a greenhouse made of stone is not cheap and not easy, that's for sure. The reason for this is the natural origin of the material, which is still necessary and the right choice. This is not a brick with its even corners and sides, but an unprocessed stone, the installation work of which is not cheap. Also in this structure it will be necessary to correctly place the armo-belt (if the greenhouse is large) and shed its sides.

The foundation for a greenhouse made of stone will not only make its base rigid, which will qualitatively fix the frame of the greenhouse, but also protect the inside of the greenhouse from various adversities. In addition, such a foundation, in view of its large weight, necessarily requires installation on a pillow in order to avoid subsidence and damage or distortion of the greenhouse.

Strip foundation

Perhaps the most familiar foundation for any country house. It is not a problem to make it, especially since at the end of the work, you will receive a high-quality and really reliable foundation, and it will be inexpensive. As the saying goes, sheer benefits. You can make a strip foundation for a polycarbonate greenhouse using a mortar, formwork and pillow, laid under it. It is necessary for the rigidity of the base, which will prevent subsidence.

A foundation with a width of 25-40 cm will be enough to pour to a depth of 50-60 cm. Such strength is enough even for an arbor or summer makeshift. Pre-lay a pillow made of gravel and sand, install a formwork that will give shape and fill the foundation, the strength of which will be added by a light armo belt. It will be much better if the foundation rises above the ground level, you can determine the height yourself, but do it at least 20-30 cm.

Installing the frame on the foundation

During pouring or construction of the foundation of your choice, be sure to install the fasteners for the frame of the greenhouse directly in it. This can be a metal corner for installation, a horizontal beam, armature coming out of the foundation or other fastenings.

Now, after reading our material, you know how to make a foundation for a polycarbonate greenhouse, how to choose the material to create it, and how to install the frame. It remains only to determine the remaining elements and the main steps of the construction, and you can begin to work.

We hasten to note that the foundation for a winter greenhouse is best built from more durable materials. Stone and concrete will show themselves well here.
