Wellsley Apple Tree: Variety Description and Cultivation Rules

Winter varieties of apple trees are in almost all suburban and household plots. Most amateur gardeners, when choosing a variety, are guided by such indicators as high productivity from one fruit tree, unpretentiousness in cultivation, as well as good taste and external characteristics of ripened fruits. Wellsie belongs to the category of such varieties.

Grade description

Variety "Wellsie" is known to any experienced gardener. Such apple trees are an adornment of any garden and are found on the territory of our country quite often.

Fruits in the ripening stage have a beautiful and very rich red, and in some cases raspberry color. Sometimes there are fruits that have a yellow-green color with a slight blush. The shape of the fruit is round, slightly oblong. The standard weight of the fruit does not exceed one hundred and fifty grams.

Apples have a delicate and subtle aroma. The pulp is juicy, sweet and sour taste. The skin is relatively thin, the seed chambers are small. Thus, the outwardly ripened fruits are very attractive.

The timing of harvesting depends on the characteristics of weather factors, as well as climatic conditions in the cultivation region. Most often, the ripening maturity of the Welsey variety occurs in the second half of September or early October.

Fruit trees of this variety are quite large. Initially, young plants have a pyramidal crown. A little later, the crown takes on a rounded shape. The branches of the trees rush up and form sharp angles, which, subject to an abundant harvest, can provoke breakage of branches. The end of the branches is slightly lowered down, which gives the crown a slightly wilted look. Shoots of medium thickness, brown, with a slight pubescence. Leaves have wavy edges and curl in the apical part. Shine of dark green leaves, which are at right angles to the shoots, is clearly visible. At the flowering stage, the fruit tree forms very beautiful, pink-white buds, from which medium-sized flowers of the same color bloom.

The advantages of growing Welsey fruit trees are the early maturity of the trees, the attractiveness of the fruits and the standard size. In addition, apples of this variety do not need to ripen and can be consumed immediately after harvest. The fruits of Wells can boast a relatively long keeping quality and are well preserved until mid-January.

The variety is very resistant to disease damage, especially to scab, and has average frost resistance. All these qualities made Welsey quite popular with numerous breeders. The variety has long been used as a source form for breeding many new varieties of apple trees.

Of course, this variety has some disadvantages, which, however, are not numerous. The minuses include the tendency of the fruit to show enough early shedding, which, if the apples are not picked up on time, can cause the loss of more than half the crop. Another "unpleasant" feature of "Wellsie" is represented by the variability of taste indicators of already ripened fruits. The change in taste completely depends on weather conditions and climatic features in the cultivation region. So, after too rainy and cold summers, apples of this variety will have a watery and not very pleasant taste.

The benefits and nutritional value of fruits

The pulp of the fruits of this variety is white or with a slightly greenish tint. Red streaks are allowed. Wellsie apples have a sweet and sour taste and delicate aroma. The flavoring qualities of apples of this variety, as already mentioned, can vary.

The standard parameters of the chemical composition of the fruit are as follows:

  • sugar content does not exceed 10.1 percent;
  • titrated acid content does not exceed 0.61 percent;
  • the content of ascorbic acid does not exceed 10.2 milligrams per hundred grams of fruit;
  • the content of P-active substances does not exceed 185 milligrams per hundred grams of fruit;
  • the content of pectin substances does not exceed 10.5 percent.

Removable crop maturity in the midland of Russia has been observed since the second half of September. The strength parameters of fastening the fruits on the tree are insufficient, which requires compliance with the harvest time. Fruits can be consumed fresh, as well as the main raw materials for the production of juice, suitable for urination.

Planting and Care Rules

The features of the Wellsie planting and the rules for caring for this apple variety are not fundamentally different from the cultivation technology of other varieties. It should be based on several key recommendations.

  1. It is best to choose a site for landing with indicators of the depth of water at a level of no more than four meters.
  2. Planting of planting material can be carried out in spring and autumn.
  3. Planting holes should be prepared at least one week before the planting of purchased seedlings.
  4. Wellsie fruit plants love good light, but they are poorly affected by direct exposure to the scorching sun.
  5. Landing should be protected from drafts.
  6. Soil at the landing site must be of high quality, as well as air and water permeability, loamy or loamy-loamy sand character.
  7. Wells for landing should have standard sizes: from fifty to eight centimeters wide and not more than one hundred and twenty centimeters deep.
  8. The bottom of the hole must be filled with the upper turf layer mixed with superphosphate and wood ash, as well as compost.
  9. Planting is carried out with the simultaneous installation of a peg to maintain the plant in an upright position.
  10. The fastening of the plant to the peg is carried out using soft and non-traumatic bark of the plant tissue.
  11. After planting, abundant watering of the plant is mandatory.

Care in the first years of life of an apple tree of this variety consists in watering, loosening and fertilizing. In a dry summer, high-quality watering is carried out four times a month. For watering, it is recommended to choose the evening time. Loosening is required immediately after watering or rain. It is important to carefully monitor the location of the roots so as not to cause damage to them during operation.

Fertilizers use standard, which can be applied to any variety of apple trees. In the summer, it is best to use nitrogen and phosphorus-potash fertilizing. In autumn, the plant needs organic fertilizers. Top dressing should be done several times a year. Urea-based non-concentrated solutions or a mixture of wood ash and slurry are considered good fertilizers for the Wellsie apple tree.

In the first year after planting an apple tree, it is required to perform crown formation by pruning.

Harvesting and storage

Wellsie apples are characterized by an unreliable fastening on a tree, which requires meeting the collection time. To minimize yield loss, it is very important not to miss the ripening period of apples, which may have slight fluctuations depending on the cultivation area and weather conditions. Crumbled fruits can be used for processing.

The maximum shelf life of the fruits ends on the last days of February. In the room for storage of the crop should be the optimum temperature and sufficient humidity. Decrease in humidity provokes withering and wrinkling of fruits.

Gardeners reviews

For most gardeners in our country, the Welsi apple tree variety remains a favorite for a long time. Reviews about him are numerous and positive. However, gardeners note that clay soils can significantly reduce productivity and make cultivation of an apple tree of this variety unpromising. Therefore, before planting such trees on your site, make sure that the soil is suitable for them.
