Rhubarb is a fairly common perennial herb with a powerful root system and very large fleshy leaves that sit on thick petioles.

However, it must be borne in mind that the lack of water and high temperature indicators prevent the leaf outlet from developing fully, and the quality of the edible petioles is greatly reduced. They become coarse and not juicy enough, their fiberiness increases.
Description of varieties
In summer cottages and household plots, it is recommended to grow several varieties of rhubarb at once. A good option is the cultivation of species with different ripening periods, as well as different colors. Of green petioles, mashed potatoes are most often prepared; with their use, very tasty and vitamin green cabbage soup are obtained. It is advisable to use red-hot plants for cooking compote, jelly or in the manufacture of filling for pies.
The following varieties are considered the most popular and fruitful:
- Moscow-42 - A very early variety with high productivity and excellent taste. The length of the petioles is not more than 70 centimeters, and their thickness does not exceed 3 centimeters. Petioles are smooth, green, with a red stripe near the base.

- Tukumsky-5 - A very early and productive variety, characterized by a wonderful taste of rounded and juicy petioles. The length of the petiole is about 70 centimeters, and the average weight of one petiole can reach 150 grams.
- Ogrsky-13 refers to mid-ripening and high-yielding varieties. It grows well and forms petioles in shading. The pulp of long and thick petioles is very juicy and tender. A pair of generative shoots forms on the plant.
How to care for rhubarb
Rhubarb can be propagated vegetatively or by seed. The first option involves dividing the bush, whose age is no more than five years. You can not carry out vegetative propagation of the plant at the flowering stage.
Bush division performed in spring or early fall, before the first frost. A bush dug from the soil should be divided into several parts. A healthy root with a pair of large apical buds is suitable for planting. In the process of planting, the kidneys should be buried no more than one and a half centimeters.

- care of the plant in the spring involves digging and making 30 grams of ammonium nitrate, which is supplemented by superphosphate and potassium salt;
- each season, it is necessary to feed the rhubarb once with the following composition: a little more than a teaspoon of urea, a tablespoon of nitrophoska and 500 grams of mullein should be added to a bucket of water.
The main area of nutrition, which should be provided to the culture for full growth, is about a square meter per bush. Despite the fact that caring for the plant is minimal, some features of the culture should be taken into account:
- although the plant is shade tolerant, it prefers sufficiently lighted areas for planting;
- young rhubarb bushes are characterized by special sensitivity to lighting;
- rhubarb is best when grown on loamy areas and moisture-intensive soils enriched with organic matter;
- Rhubarb is a water-loving plant and during drought requires watering at least once a week in the amount of at least 15 liters of water per square meter.
