Angelina asked us a question of concern to her: "Where do the cracks on the stems of cucumbers come from?"
Sometimes the cucumber begins to crack. In this case, the propagation of cracks is quite fast. What is the reason? Why is this happening? There are actually several reasons. This can be stagnation of moisture at the roots, while the problem may not be visible from above. You can check your fears in the following way: dig 20 centimeters deep. Outside, the soil can be dry, but inside it can be wet.
Cracks may also be present on the stems of cucumbers due to a lack of potassium or calcium. Check this help agronomist. He will do a soil analysis. If you regularly produce mineral fertilizers in the greenhouse, there will be no problems with the concentration of potassium and calcium.
The stem also cracks due to such a parasite as a cucumber mosquito. Pests often attack weakened plants. They affect not only the stem, but also the roots. Small stalks are clearly visible on the stems. After some time, the plant begins to rot, the fruits on it also decay.
In the greenhouse, the parasite is found along with plant soil, planting material, fertilizers. Adults appear when growing seedlings. The insect larvae are dangerous. They gnaw passages in the stems and roots.
The problem is that in addition to cracks appearing on the stems of cucumbers, harmful ticks and various diseases come with mosquitoes.
How to deal with a pest
To combat harmful insects in the greenhouse, the following methods are used:
- chemical disinfection of the soil;
- heat treatment of the earth;
- spraying the basal part of the cucumber and stems with insecticides;
- the use of yellow glue traps;
- modern agronomy is used, which is aimed at growing healthy plants.
The drug "Spark" can act as an insecticide. 1 tablet is dissolved in 10 liters of water. On 1 m2 should account for about 100 milliliters of solution.
Cucumber Mosaic Virus
A cucumber mosaic virus can be detected in the greenhouse. It is a necrotic strain, which is the most dangerous of phytoviruses. Crop rotation in this case does not help.
The virus is found not only in the greenhouse, but also in open ground. Its distribution is often recorded in Ukraine, the North Caucasus and the Lower Volga. Where cucumbers are grown. In appearance, it seems that the culture does not have enough nutrition, but this is not so.
The leaves of cucumbers dry, threadlike formations appear on the fruits. The top is dying. Mosaic coloring appears on the leaves. Growth becomes slow, the stems begin to crack.
At low temperatures, the leaves begin to wrinkle and become crooked. With a sharp cooling, the stem becomes glassy.
In winter, in a greenhouse, the virus can persist in the root system of perennials - quinoa, sow thistle, wood lice. In nature, the disease is transmitted by aphids. In total, 70 varieties of aphids that can transmit the virus, including melons, greenhouses, and potatoes, are distinguished. Ecology does not affect the development of the virus.
Important! The virus attracts aphids to diseased plants by altering the smell of plants. Insects run to the cucumbers, but after tasting the leaves, they are removed to healthy plants. So they carry the virus.
In view of the foregoing, in a greenhouse on healthy plants the insect population is several times higher than on patients. The virus is not persistent - it does not stay in the body of the parasite for a long time.
How to fight
An increase in temperature will help get rid of the disease in the greenhouse. It is advisable to warm the seeds to a temperature of 56 degrees. But not all of them will stand it. Seedlings are recommended to be grown in sterilized or composted substrates or soil from a deep soil horizon.
Weed control, inspection, and removal of affected plants should also be carried out regularly. You can fight aphids with pesticides (Actara, Actellik) or biological products. Plants are often sprayed with aromatic oils for the same purpose. Pests do not tolerate spraying with skim milk.
It is important to carry out disinfection in a timely manner with the tools with which you cut plants. Many gardeners prefer to grow virus-resistant cucumbers, for example:
