Catherine asked us these questions: "For what reason can leaves turn black on a pear? How can a tree be cured?"
Sometimes a pear leaves become charred. Why is this happening? It's all about a disease called a bacterial burn. Leaves curl and blacken. If you cut and collect the affected areas, the disease will not go away. It just disappears for a while, the tree will continue to dry.
Blackened leaves - a sign of a bacterial burn
The presented disease often affects stone fruits, fruit crops, but the pear suffers from this ailment more than other residents of the garden. The first signs of the disease appear in June. In the photo you can see that the young leaves begin to turn brown, blacken, starting from the edges and the central part of the leaf. A young shoot can also turn brown, its color is approaching coal-black. In appearance, it resembles something burned with a blowtorch. The leaves on the pears turn black after the disease penetrates the plant through various cracks, wounds, through nectaries, stomata of the leaves.
Why is the pear sick? The main cause of transmission is through a poorly crafted tool. It is recommended immediately after trimming to carry out its disinfection in a solution of boric acid. Sometimes the infection is transmitted with planting material. Even in the photo, the affected pear looks depressing. Bacteria quickly multiply, which leads to the death of tissues. In a plant, the disease moves along with the juice through the vessels.
What to do if the leaves turn black
Why should you act fast? The sooner you start saving the plant, the more likely it will be to recover. The treatment is difficult, therefore it is advisable to simply destroy the tree. But if you want to save him, you can try this option:
- Do the following: take a plastic canister from under the water. Trim the top, place under the tree.
- Dilute iron sulphate in a plastic dish: a tablespoon of the product is taken on a bucket of water.
- Pour the mixture into the cut canister.
- Cut strips of cotton sheets. Their width should be 10 centimeters.
- Wrap them in the trunk of the pear to the top. The ends of the tapes should be placed in the container where the copper sulfate is located.
- The solution should be poured into a plastic bottle. Pre-burn holes in it.
- The bottle is hung over the tape so that the fabric is constantly wet. So the treatment will be carried out constantly, and the tape will be wet all the time.
After a day, the pear must be sprayed with a solution of iron sulfate. The remaining mixture is poured under the root.
Then again, within 7 days, the tree is processed according to the above method. The remaining mixture is poured. Tanks should be washed well. Next, zinc sulfate is bred. You can add potassium sulfate to it. Then the cycle is repeated: iron, copper, zinc, potassium sulfate. The procedure is carried out from spring to autumn. The solution should be changed every 7 days.
What else can you fight with the disease
You can use antibiotics, namely:
They are bred in water and sprayed with a tree, starting from the beginning of flowering and at intervals of 5 days.
We also suggest that you find out the reason for the lack of flowering in the pear by reading a previously published article on our website.
Scab - how and what to treat
Another cause of problems with pear leaves is scab. The fungus is quite common. At the same time, not only the leaves are affected, but also the shoots, fruits and flowers. How it looks, you can see in the photo. Affected leaves fly around.
Important! You should immediately get rid of the disease, as it spreads rapidly.
You can treat the pear with antibiotics. In this case, follow strictly according to the instructions. The source of infection may not be hidden in the tree itself, but in fallen fruits or leaves. Therefore, you should carefully process the area around the pear, as well as remove the leaves and get rid of them.
Humidity and dust
In some cases, the cause of blackening of the leaves is low humidity. In this case, even heavy watering does not help. Some varieties do not tolerate the influence of dust - southern plant varieties. The introduction of a drip irrigation system will help.
Leaves curl from aphid invasion
Another reason - aphid. The parasite drinks juice from the leaves, and they lose nutrients. After that, the sheets turn black and curl into a tube. Help consists in processing pears with herbicides.
