Many work in the country require specific skills. For example, we need to make an arch for grapes, which would have a sloping, spherical shape. Naturally, for this, the working material must be brought into the appropriate form. We take a regular or profile pipe with the hope that it can easily yield to our efforts. But everything is going a little different than we expected, and if the bend even turns out, then it is curved, uneven, moves a few centimeters from the given place. Very rarely, in only about 10% of cases, it turns out to bend the product with your own hands without special tools successfully. But this result is not very suitable for us for obvious reasons. Therefore, the site decided to present modern and classic methods that will help bend the metal tube quickly and strictly in the right place.
Where in the country can a pipe bend come in handy
You should not think that this material does not concern you in any way, since you are not going to build something round or similar.
A bent pipe is necessary in so many cases:
- For the construction of arches, arbors and canopies;
- In the construction of fences, hedges and more serious fences;
- In landscape design, for the device and construction of small architectural forms;
- In the case of working with engineering systems on the site, with the same sewer or water supply;
- For the production of country furniture, light and small frames, etc.
One of the cases when you need to bend a metal tube is the desire to leave the material whole. For example, when working with the assembly of frames ... here you can always cut the source into two parts and connect them at the right angle by welding or bolts and nuts.
But you can leave the material whole, and then you will definitely need to bend it.
So, there are several ways to help bend the pipe efficiently and with a clear mark.
How to bend a metal pipe
To produce such a deformation, simple machine tools - pipe benders are often used in the country:
- Manual pipe benders. Such machines are used for bending a small diameter and most often for non-ferrous metals. The process itself is quite simple - you need to install the tube in the machine, fix it, and then, using a special lever, make a bend. You can change the diameter by promoting the product in the machine and sequentially making additional bends, if, of course, your machine allows it;
- Hydraulic pipe benders work approximately on the same principle, but there does not need to use a lot of physical force. The main effect is on hydraulic cylinders;
- Electromechanical pipe benders are even more serious and, naturally, expensive equipment. They are distinguished by multitasking and accuracy in work.
It is necessary to consider the types of pipe benders, depending on the requirements for bends and pipe manufacturing materials:
- Dorn pipe bender - for products with a thin wall and small diameter;
- Spring - for manual bending using a spring (for tubes of small cross section);
- Crossbow - a machine with a ready-made shape for bending;
- Segment pipe bender - a machine that works by drawing a pipe around a special segment.
You can bend a metal product on a plane-parallel plate. So, setting the workpiece in the clamps, a force is applied, due to which the pipe takes the form of a plate. It is quite simple, and the fold turns out to be of high quality. But in the case of working with the plate, you will receive products of exactly the same shape, with an identical bend. This is the whole low practicality of the method, since in order to obtain other forms you will need to have several plates at the cottage.
There is a method in which a metal spring is used. But it works with non-ferrous metals, which are soft.
The work object is installed inside the spring, clamped with one edge in a vice and bent to the desired diameter. So the compressive and tensile forces are transferred from the pipe walls to the spring, and the chance that the colored thin-walled material will burst is seriously reduced.
How to bend a pipe using sand
There is also a grandfather method in which sand is used. It is good because you do not need a special machine or other expensive equipment to bend metal.
Sand is poured inside the pipe, so that it completely occupies the entire internal space. Next, the edges of the product must be plugged so that the sand does not spill out. The next step is to heat the metal in the place of the future bend, which can be done with a burner. The last stage is fixation and effort, due to which the necessary form will be obtained. After work, sand pours out of the tube.
It is very important not to bend galvanized and painted products by heating, because at the place of bending, a protective or decorative layer may be violated.
Is it possible to bend a profile pipe
It is clear that, due to its shape, a square or profile pipe has increased rigidity. Therefore, serious skills should be applied here, but do not forget that there are expert advice for such matters.
So, sand is poured into the pipe. It is advisable to be denser if you want to maximize maintain the normal shape of the product at the bend. It is done simply! First, one edge is closed with a wooden peg, then sand is poured inside, and the second edge is also closed. The tube is installed in a vice and straightened with a mallet until it receives the necessary shape.
You can warm up the metal at the bend, and even use a pipe bender designed for the profile pipe, but any assessment of the possibilities and subsequent actions takes place directly on the spot.
We use a grinder and welding
Honestly, this is a very controversial method: using it takes a lot of effort, since you are doing double work. Moreover, if it is necessary to bend a lot of pipes, then money is also spent, because the electricity today is very expensive, and for the operation of the grinder and welding machine it needs a lot.
The method consists in the fact that several cuts are made at the bend of the pipe, due to which it loses strength. Further, even manually, the product is bent, and the incisions are welded. Of course, the method is applicable depending on the radius and initial parameters of the object of work, but if possible, it is better to use other, simpler and faster methods.

When working with heating, water supply or even at the time of building a greenhouse in the country, we have to use plastic pipes. They can be bent with the least effort and even very simply, but just as easily they can be rendered unusable. Indeed, externally the product takes on the form we need, but we do not see what is happening to it from the inside. The material can be severely damaged, which will necessarily affect its performance. Okay, if a frame for a spring greenhouse is assembled from it, but if the pipe is needed for the heating system of the country house or for the water supply, then there may be troubles.
Bending metal should be very neat, gradual movement. Without sharp fractures, you can bend the pipe up to 90 degrees, absolutely without damage. But it is necessary to do this not in one place, getting a pointed angle, but for at least a few centimeters, promoting the bend along the pipe. Thus, you can even bend the tube to its opposite direction, that is, up to 180 degrees. This is often necessary when installing a warm water floor in the country. It is only necessary to comply with the mandatory requirement - to do not one sharp bend, but two at 90 degrees, at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other. Then no problems are foreseen.
When bending a metal-plastic pipe, you can also use sand, which helped us earlier with metal ones. The whole process is identical - backfilling of sand, clogging of the edges and bending, but only fewer sudden movements and more accuracy.
We bend polypropylene
In the country, the s / n tube is also useful. It is suitable for plumbing work not only in city apartments, but also in any residential building. Spend some water on the new kitchen in the country house, to the summer shower, to the car wash - all this can be done with polypropylene.
It is often necessary to bend it, although experienced plumbers use angle couplings for this.
They are commercially available in a large assortment, for almost any required degree, so we advise you to give the structure the desired shape by soldering and angles. But if you want to bend the plastic pipe without unnecessary expenses, use the following method.
This method is very simple - heating with a hairdryer. You need to work without sudden movements and only with gradual heating and bending. Strong bends, which simply can change the internal section, cannot be allowed. This will affect the pressure in the pipe, which we do not need.
The heated tube is bent and fixed in the required position until it cools, then it is used as intended. You can also apply sand here, but it is much better to take special components for work, which we talked about earlier.
You can bend the pipe with or without a special tool, but it all depends on the requirements for the type of finished product and its quality. Therefore, we recommend that you do everything according to the rules, as well as using tried and tested modern methods, because even in the country you need reliable, practical and aesthetically attractive products.
