Water lily: a beautiful resident of garden ponds


The origin of the name of this plant is associated with ancient Greek mythology - that was the name of one of the water nymphs. The Slavs nicknamed this flower the same grass, or "mermaid". According to their beliefs, a water lily flower protected during travels from misfortunes and troubles. To protect it, they put it in an amulet or incense.

This genus includes more than 35 species of plants that grow in tropical and temperate regions - from Canada to the equator. In Russia, the most common species is snow-white water lily, in which a very powerful rhizome about 5 cm thick is formed at the bottom of the reservoir.

Cord-shaped and long roots go down from the rhizome, and to the top to the surface are rounded, wide leaves with cuts at the base on the petioles, as well as peduncles. The beginning of flowering water lilies occurs in May and lasts until the onset of the first frost. The peak is expected in July-August. Flowers water lilies snow-white with a delicate aroma. Outside the flowers there are 4 green sepals, inside there are white petals that go to the stamen in the center. Such a flower lasts for four days. The fruit of a lily is presented in the form of a box, which develops under water. When it ripens, it opens and spills out seeds that look like fish eggs.   • For planting, it is good to use peat with a layer of 2-3 cm, placing it at the bottom of the vessel.
  • Then use a mixture of compost, garden soil, sand in equal proportions. Having planted a water lily, do not deepen the bud of growth.
  • After the soil is crushed, covered with pebbles, so that after the plant does not surface.
  • Then the vessel is neatly placed in a pond. The appropriate depth depends on the plant variety. For dwarf ones, this is 15-20 cm, tall ones, 70-100 cm from the surface to the growth bud.
  • In the spring, to accelerate the development of plants, it is better to place a container with a lily in shallow water, until the leaves have formed. After their growth, it is necessary to carry out a deeper placement. Plants that are planted early can take root and bloom in the first year.

The most difficult thing to grow water lilies is to keep them for the winter. In each case, the approach is individual. A plant can be left in place for the winter if it is located at a depth of 0.5 meters or more. In this case, the pond should be large and not freeze.
