Many fruits are consumed immediately, in their raw form, some are preserved, but a certain part should be kept fresh for a long time. Store vegetables and fruits in the country should be correct, creating for each individual species certain, most suitable conditions. There are many places for this, which we spoke about earlier and will definitely mention right now.

Standard Cellar Storage

Standard cellars in the country are used everywhere. These are special constructions or whole rooms located under the house, summer kitchen, shed, garage. But they can also be designed as annexes to the main buildings or simply separately dug in the thickness of the soil.

Each individual cellar is a room with quite a variety of storage conditions. Therefore, be sure to check the temperature, humidity and other parameters necessary for the high-quality storage of vegetables and fruits. Remember that the lower part of the cellar may be wetter, the walls adjacent to the house are warm, and those facing the street are cold. Be sure to think about this when distributing the crop on the floor, shelves and suspensions of the cellar.

Storage of crops in the pantry

The pantry in the house, summer kitchen or annex is also a good room for storing fruits and vegetables. But here you should definitely remember some specific conditions, if you decide to store the whole crop in this place, and not just its temporary stocks:

  • Often, a pantry is not such a large room, and therefore the whole crop on its area may not fit. Therefore, pre-calculate the volumes of possible storage;
  • If vegetables and fruits are constantly present in the pantry, and not just seaming and drying, it will be necessary to periodically clean and disinfect, sort vegetables and fruits;
  • It is very possible that due to the increased temperature in the home extension or another area of ​​the pantry, the temperature will be higher than in the cellar. This can lead to crop problems. Humidity may also not be up to par. Do not forget about the change in temperature and condensation, which is possible due to the frequent use of the pantry inside the house or summer kitchen;
  • Unpleasant aromas, rodents, small insects are additional negative factors that can make storing vegetables in an almost residential area unacceptable.

We do not argue that almost half of the indicated by us is possible in other places of storage of the crop in the country, but you must admit that if the smell of rotten potatoes is not present in your house, this is already a serious positive result. It is for this reason that we recommend using the pantry only for preservation, closed products, cereals, drying and other things, and if for vegetables with fruits, then only on temporary conditions or in small quantities.

Storage of fruits and vegetables in the attic

Any attic space can serve as a place to store crops in the country, if the right conditions are created there.

Most often, our attics are insulated, which means they are airtight. This is a huge plus, since in the place of storage of the crop should be a stable temperature and the possibility of its regulation as needed. It’s good if there is ventilation in the attic, because food is very necessary for fresh air.

If you equip an attic with suitable shelves and drawers, it is quite possible to get a room where vegetables and fruits can be stored for a long time. But with the use of attic rooms there are many inconveniences, some of which we will immediately list:

  • Inconvenient access is a major issue;
  • Further, expensive retrofitting of the premises, if the attic does not have a suitable finish;
  • In addition, a sharp change in temperature. If the attic is not insulated, it will be too cold in winter. If the chimney of stove heating passes through the attic, this is also not very good, because each time during the furnace the temperature, and possibly humidity, will change.

There are many similar problems, but if desired, all of them can be eliminated.

Where else in the country to arrange storage

Our practicality often breaks serious records, and therefore even if we do not have a ready-made cellar or other room for storing the crop, we will certainly come up with one. Here are some ideas for you not to waste time.

Country dugout cellar

This is the simplest cellar, which is built literally in a few days. Of course, for its construction, compliance with many conditions and construction technology will be required, but if you already have something like that, then there will be no problems with the storage of products.

Earlier we talked about how to build a thermos greenhouse in the country. This is a high-quality and reliable design, which is great for winter growing vegetables and herbs. But it happens that the greenhouse is not used in the winter. It is then that it can be involved in a kind of warehouse.

Temporary storage in summer cottages

If you need to store a small amount of vegetables and fruits, for example, just a couple of bags of potatoes, carrots and onions, then you can use a variety of rooms for this. Here you don’t even have to work especially hard to create constant conditions, it will be enough to even the temperature and humidity, to cope with the ventilation device. Thus, temporary storage can be created in a garage, a newly built barn, hangar, temporary hut and so on.

These are only temporary solutions that will allow you to store small quantities of the crop or provide temporary storage. If you need to store fruits, vegetables and preservation all the cold time, you should think about setting up a full-fledged cellar or pantry.
