How to paste wallpaper: tips from experts

Knowing how to glue the wallpaper is necessary if you decide to cope with this task with your own hands. There are certain subtleties, which are very desirable to take into account to get a good result.

How to prepare the walls

This is the first stage on which the success of the whole event depends.

The surface requirements are as follows - must be dry, smooth, without cracks. Of course, the remains of the previous finishing materials are usually stored on the wall, they should be scraped off. To facilitate the process, it is advised to wet the wall with water and wait a quarter of an hour, after which the scraping process will become easier. The surface must be primed before wallpapering if the walls in the apartment are new.

The walls, recently covered with plaster, are ready for pasting if they look bright and dry. To test the readiness, you can resort to such a test: glue a piece of plastic film with a scotch tape to the wall, and after 10 -12 hours see if the surface is foggy under the film. If there are no signs of fogging, then this means that the wall is sufficiently dry and ready for wallpapering. The porous structure of the plaster absorbs moisture well, so it is worthwhile to primer the surface 1-2 times and then paste.

It often happens that the wall on which the wallpaper is to be glued is covered with paint or varnish. Then you need to find out whether it is necessary to remove them or whether it can be glued on top. To check how firmly the varnish or paint adheres to the wall, we use adhesive tape, the strip of which is glued to the wall and then we are torn off with a sharp movement. If there are particles of paint and varnish on the scotch tape, then the fastening strength of the new finishing material on such a wall cannot be guaranteed. Paint in this case will have to be removed. An alternative is to rinse the walls with an alkaline solution first and then with water. And plastering is recommended!

To remove cullet and other types, for the fixing of which dispersion glue was used, a special solvent will be needed.

Thus, wall preparation is as follows:

  • cleaning from dust and dirt particles with sandpaper, removing the old coating as described above;
  • putty smoothing with simultaneous coating of all cracks; in difficult cases, reinforced mesh and an additional layer of putty are used.

Types of wallpaper and features of their gluing

Today, various types of wallpapers are produced, the gluing technology of which can have serious differences. For some types of glue, it is enough to apply glue only on the decoration material or on the wall, for others it is recommended to lubricate both the wallpaper and the surface they make with glue, there are other differences.

Paper wallpaper

The most popular type, the most affordable. Gluing paper wallpapers is easy. They differ in thickness, surface texture (smooth, embossed or patterned). They can be glued with almost any glue, the main thing is to carefully apply it with an even layer on the wrong side of the wallpaper sheet.

When sticking models with a pattern, it is necessary to control so that it is correctly composed.

There are paper wallpapers that are painted after gluing; they are a white embossed canvas.

When a layer of glue is applied, it is recommended to double the sheet, glue inward and wait a few minutes so that the glue is absorbed during this time, and then proceed to gluing.

Non-woven wallpaper

The material for them is a non-woven material called non-woven. It is recommended to glue the material on very well-aligned walls, since it does not mask these surface defects and stains.

As for the gluing process itself, it is simple:

  • first, smear the wallpaper glue with an even layer;
  • then apply them to the wall.

But it is important to remember that special glue is necessary for work.

Vinyl wallpapers

This is a relatively new species that enjoys good demand, thanks to such qualities as:

  • easy gluing;
  • a wide variety of textures;
  • resistance to fading and yellowing;
  • the presence of a moisture barrier.

The base material is paper or non-woven, on which a layer of polyvinyl chloride foamed or smooth is applied. Such wallpapers are also appreciated for well masking the unevenness of the walls.

Wallpaper glue

As a rule, on a roll there is an indication about the type of recommended glue and recommendations for use. We advise you to carefully study this information and not to deviate from the recommendations given by the manufacturer. This is especially true of proportions, which must be observed when breeding powder, otherwise you risk getting poorly glued wallpaper with spots.

Practical advice from the masters

It is recommended to start sticking from the window. It is better to apply the first piece with a plumb line or level so that "verticality" is strictly observed otherwise the subsequent stripes will go awry.

When applying the sheet to the wall, it should be lightly pressed with a soft brush or roller, smoothing from the center to the edges so as to exclude the appearance of bubbles. From an awkward movement, the glue may appear on the front surface, it must be removed with a damp sponge, gently moistening it with the place soiled with glue, but do not rub!

During the drying of the glued walls, it is not necessary to heat the room too much, as well as create drafts, since these circumstances can lead to divergence of joints,

Professionals do not recommend sticking a strip through an angle or into a corner.

In the process of gluing wallpaper to the door fit on one side. The wallpaper strip that captures a portion of the door leaf should be cut vertically to the upper border of the leaf. The strip is pressed vertically to the wall surface, and the protrusion below the upper edge of the door is cut off. The ledge above the door is pressed against the wall.

If there is a radiator on the wall, then it is recommended to glue the wall behind it no more than 10-20 cm, and paint the rest of the place to match the color of the wallpaper.

Approaching the locations of the outlets, it is recommended to turn off the electricity, and then remove the outlet, make a cross-shaped incision on the wallpaper and bend the edges inward.
