The best place to store vegetables, seafood and other products in the country is a cellar. But not every one of us has the opportunity to dig it or install a finished plastic cellar. Therefore, we decided to build a pantry in the country, in which we will store our stocks.
A pantry for a summer residence, or simply a pantry, can be organized in a ready-made room or rebuilt. It seems to us that we should not consider all the stages of the construction of a new building on a site that will be used to store vegetables and other products, since this process is almost identical to the construction of a barn or garage. We’ll better consider the requirements for the equipment of the internal space, which, by the way, can be organized all in the same barn or garage.
So, a country pantry and everything that we know about it.
What are the requirements for summer storage
In order for our products to be stored for a long time and stored with high quality, we need to foresee everything to the smallest detail. And, if we do this, then our work will affect not only the duration of storage, but also the ease of use of the cottage pantry.
Where to place the pantry?
First of all, you need to choose the right place where we will build such a room. It should be as close as possible to the house and kitchen, so that you don’t have to run for products across the entire plot, but also located in such a way that the aromas of fresh vegetables enter the living space less. To do this, you can choose the corner of the summer kitchen, a piece of the veranda in a residential building, and set aside a small room for storage that is not used for its intended purpose.
What size should a country pantry be?
You need to correctly calculate the number of products that will be stored in the pantry. It is very difficult to do this, because every year in the country there is a completely different crop, and conservation is closed in different quantities, depending on the budget or even desire. Therefore, try to make the most accurate calculations, be sure that the number of products can increase. Agree, it is much more correct to build a pantry a little more than then not know where to put another bag of potatoes or a couple of cans of compotes.
Determine the shape of the pantry, paying attention to the shelves and their depth. The inner space, the one in the center, remains for passage, and the shelves are hung on the walls, U-shaped. If the room is wide, then a rack with shelves can be installed in the center, which is very convenient.
Internal equipment of the pantry
Here, everything is more or less simple, since the entire internal arrangement is made of wood, even inexpensive species, but always dry ones, can be used. It is desirable to treat the wood with non-toxic impregnations, as in some places there will be contact with liquids and moisture, which is almost impossible to prevent (rotting of vegetables, “explosion” of cans and leakage of brines, etc. are possible).
It will be necessary to think about pallets, which must be on the floor. How to make pallets with your own hands, we already told you earlier. The production of vegetable boxes, which must be ventilated and stand on pallets, at a distance of 10-15 cm from the floor, will not hurt. Do not forget about pendants, hooks and wire extensions - you can always place onion knives and garlic, dried mushrooms and other products on them.
Do I need to insulate the pantry?
We will answer this question in the affirmative, because thermal insulation helps to maintain a more or less stable temperature in the interior. Inexpensive insulation, such as polystyrene, will help to limit the penetration of cold and frost inside the winter, as well as limit the flow of hot air in the summer. Therefore, nothing in this pantry will turn sour in the summer, and will not freeze in the cold.
We recommend the foam, as it is inexpensive, and does not have special requirements for mounting on the surface. Even before the shelves are strengthened, it can be installed on the floor, ceiling and walls with simple plastic mushrooms, or on glue.
Ventilation in the pantry in the country
One of the basic requirements of a food storage room is coolness and dryness. Fresh air is also important, and therefore ventilation is simply necessary. Moreover, it will help get rid of unpleasant odors that may occur from products inside.
How to make ventilation in the pantry, we will tell you a little later, when we proceed to the construction of the pantry in the country with our own hands!
The decision to build a pantry is very correct, and it is better to implement it as soon as possible, when you have not yet begun to harvest from the garden! Choose a free day for this and start building and finishing, it will take all the work not so much time.
So, having determined the basic requirements and having decided what size the premises for storing food in the country will be, you can begin construction and decoration. In this process, we will assume that we already have a storage room, so as not to start our conversation again with laying the foundation, forcing out the walls and installing a roof with a roof. In general, for an example we take some corner on the veranda, which we convert into a pantry.
We separate the room
First of all, if this is not a finished room, but just the space that needs to be separated, we will build a partition and install doors. The partition can be installed from OSB boards, which are excellent for simple construction and normally respond to average humidity. Moreover, it is very simple to work with this material, since it can be easily cut with a hacksaw or jigsaw.
We install the frame from a wooden beam, having previously marked the walls and ceiling. We beat off the width and height of the door, make a reinforced frame of timber for installation of the canvas, as well as a lighter crate for installing walls from OSB panels. Now cut the panels to size and sheathe one side using self-tapping screws. We put a heater, for example, mineral wool or polystyrene in the frame opening, and we sheathe the frame of our re-installation on the other hand.
We make doors from boards and beams, install a simple lock or a latch, a handle, and install the doors in place by cutting the hinges into a reinforced partition box.
It is very important to observe even angles, levels and dimensional part. Then all the work will take a couple of hours of strength. And if you have already encountered construction, for example, you did a gazebo or a barn in the country, insulated the house and so on, this work will not cause any problems at all.
Interior lining of the finished premises
We will start, perhaps, with the floor on which it is necessary to install pallets or to lay a dry board. We warn you again, the floor must be dry and constantly ventilated, and therefore, if the floor is now in the pantry from a cement screed or some other material, we advise you to throw logs and lay the board on top, with a distance of about 1 cm from each other. Thus, even if something spills on the floor, it will quickly dry out due to air circulation.
Next, we should remember about wall insulation, for which we decided to take polystyrene. It can even be mounted on unprepared walls, but it is still better to clean them of possible debris. After that, simply attach the foam plate to the wall and fix it on plastic mushrooms - a special mount that requires drilling a hole and installing a dowel-nail inward. Everything is very simple here, if you had a drill, an assembly knife and a hammer at hand, with which we will drive the fasteners.
The ceiling should also be sheathed, which can be done in a similar way. But for lining the doors with foam plastic, you will need several mounting rails that will hold the material on the door leaf. The wall of the partition can not be sheathed, since we have already laid the insulation inside.
Finishing work in the pantry
By these works we mean wall decoration after insulation. Let’s say right away that it’s not necessary to produce it, to spend money and time, because polystyrene can hang on the walls for a good ten years, or even more. But many people are interested in putting everything in order, it is then that it will be necessary to blow the cracks with foam or seal with putty, alignment with an assembly plastic grid and another layer of putty, and paint the walls.
This is a rather time-consuming process, and therefore we are sure that no one will want to contact the pantry in this context.
Any vegetable storehouse, granary, cellar or even a plastic cellar requires ventilation. Its installation is required for the correct and long-term storage of products!
Making ventilation can be very simple, and for this we need only two openings in the pantry - for the inflow and outflow of air. Thus, he will be constantly replaced.
In the area of the door, somewhere in the partition itself from the OSB plates, closer to the floor we make a small hole with a special nozzle - a crown. She is also called a ballerina. Holes with a diameter of 10-12 cm are enough. The second hole should be on the opposite wall, in extreme cases, on the side, but always under the ceiling. To do this, you can use a puncher, which will need to knock out a small hole, in the same 10-12 cm, facing the street. But to leave it just like that, without anything like a hole in the partition, is in no way possible. It will be necessary to purchase a plastic ventilation duct or a special galvanized pipe, which can be inserted from the street in the form of a smoker. In addition, it will be necessary to cover it so that water from the rain does not get inside, and put a net inside the entrance so that birds or rodents do not get into the pantry outside.
Installation of racks and boxes in the pantry
Installation of shelves is the simplest and quickest task, because all that needs to be taken into account here is the height of the rack, as well as the depth of the shelves, so that any jar fits normally on it.
The racks are made of a wooden beam, installed between the ceiling and the floor in a spacer, and fixed to the corners. Such beams are installed on the walls, as well as about 40 cm from them. As a result, you get two bars along the wall, and two next. Between these two pairs are installed beams, on which subsequently the boards are formed, forming the shelves of the rack. In general, here, too, without special details, since even a beginner summer resident can make a shelf, we are sure.
Such racks are installed around the entire perimeter of the pantry, and in the middle, on top of each other or just next to each other, are boxes for vegetables. You can also provide shelves for bags, hooks and wires, which we talked about above, for hanging garlic, onions and other products, think of drawers or already upgrade and equip the pantry at your own discretion.
In conclusion of our history, we also wanted to recall that it is imperative to protect the materials for the production of shelving, boxes and pallets with paint, varnish or simply impregnation. You should also know that every year the pantry must be cleaned, dried and disinfected. Lighting will not interfere inside the new premises!
Pantry in a country house (video)
We think that today we worked hard for fame, because we created a pantry in the country from simple materials. Believe me, such a room is very useful, and in the near future, because it is not always possible to immediately transport the whole crop home or store it for a long time in a barn on a concrete floor.
